Summer is in full swing and I for one couldn’t be happier about that! Days full of sunshine, floral dresses galore(with pockets), warm weather adventures, and so many more magical things that happens when the temperature rises. Unfortunately, along with the magical comes the dreaded Makeup Meltdown which to anyone who starts their day with a makeup routine can tell you is absolutely maddening!! It happens to the best of us, we leave the house feeling and looking good only to have the heat and humidity do everything they can to rain on your beauty parade. Not to worry though, in my over seven years in the industry I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks along the way to brave even the harshest weather conditions. First and foremost, like anything else in life, it helps to start with a good sturdy foundation..and by that I mean both a solid skin care regimen appropriate for your skin type as well as a foundation that suits your skin’s specific needs. It’s always  important to remember that unless you are taking care of your skin properly, you won’t achieve the best possible results with your makeup application. For instance, I have very oily skin..I mean, I can outshine the sun before noon with all of the oil my skin produces, and it has driven me nuts over the years! It was only when a fellow makeup artist that I worked with early on in my career bluntly said to me, “Maybe the problem isn’t your makeup, maybe its that you’re not taking care of your skin” and after I got over feeling slightly offended, my life changed and I fell in love with skincare. The rest is history, but I promise you that you don’t have to be a skincare fanatic or learn and overwhelm yourself with the thousands of products out there, you only have to get to know your skin and go from there. I recommend booking an appointment with a skin care therapist who will cleanse and analyze your skin to give you the best insight as to what products you should be using to get your skin looking and feeling its best. There are a few questions you can ask yourself in the meantime…
Does my skin tend to feel more dry or oily? or is it both?  its absolutely possible for you skin to change from season to season
Have I experienced any issues with my skin, for instance redness, sensitivity, acne, flakiness?…things of that nature, it important to recognize any issues that your skin may be experiencing
What is my current skincare routine and is it really working for me? It seems like a simple silly thing, but when you really take a look at the things you put your skin through on a daily basis, you can learn a lot
Always remember, when in doubt ask a professional! That’s what we’re here for and there’s nothing we love more than arming our clients with the knowledge they need to achieve their beauty goals! So now that I’ve gotten my love of skincare out there, here are a few products that I swear by, not only for myself but my clients as well…Although I am a Dermalogica girl at heart because of all the benefits their products privide, here are
-The right MOISTURIZER will always treat you right especially if SPF is involved (which it always should be!) and my go to, that works brilliantly under makeup, with a primer, to help keep makeup from sliding all over the place is
–Dermalogica’s Oil Free Matte SPF 30  I can’t live without it! It’s perfect for anyone with oily skin, acne, and even those of you who are outside enough and just experience oiliness in the warmer months
                           – Dermalogica’sDynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50 is great for anyone who tends to lean toward a normal or dry skin type and is perfect for anyone who is concerned with aging- the sun is the number one cause of aging!  I tend to use this one in the colder months when my skin needs a bit more hydration
PRIMER. this is something that most people tend to overlook because it sounds like just another product being pushed on us as ‘extra’ and though I understand that, I wholeheartedly disagree! Although there are a ton of primers out there that don’t really do anything, there are so many that can make or break the longevity of your makeup! There are so many I that I love..
–Dermalogica’s Skin Perfect Primer SPF 30 has a slight tint to it to blur imperfections and smooth fine lines, it can be worn alone, under, or applied over makeup throughout the day to refresh your look, it also stimulates collagen production to increase skin firmness because who doesn’t love that?! As long as I have this, my brow pencil, and mascara I’m good to go!
                – Dermologica also makes two more primers I adore…Hydrablur Primer  now although this doesn’t have SPF, this one is lightweight and perfect if you’re on the greasy side because it mattifies while giving a smooth finish to allow foundation to cover evenly…Redness Relief Primer SPF 20 is great for anyone with sensitive skin or any redness, this green tinted primer neutralizes redness and has ingredients that help soothe and calm the skin.
–Jane Iredale Absence Primer is amazing for all skin types especially those with oily skin
FOUNDATION   where to begin there are so many out there! Which I’m sure is how most of you feel so hopefully this makes it a bit easier because my biggest piece of advice is choose a foundation that is made for your skin type, I can’t stress this enough because it won’t last for feel very good while you’re wearing it if you don’t! Oh, and always make sure it matches your skin tone!
–Normal Skin…if you’re skin falls into this category then the makeup world is your oyster! It comes down to personal preference, most brands make foundations, BB Creams, CC Creams and Tinted Moisturizers to suit your needs.
–Oily Skin…Always make sure to use a foundation that is oil free and mattifying, that will help control the breakthrough oily shine throughout the day. Unfortunately, this skin type requires a bit more effort to maintain a healthy balance and sometimes takes some trial and error to find the right fit…
Jane Iredale Matte Loose Finishing Powder SPF
–Dry/Aging Skin…Hydration is key here…think of the difference between a raisin and a grape…the smoother the better… Jane Iredale makes excellent foundations for these skin types!
*Always set your liquid and cream foundations with a powder to increase longevity!
SETTING SPRAY is definitely your friend! I always come across people who are skeptical about the effectiveness of setting spray and I never falter in saying its well worth having in your makeup arsenal -for all seasons and situations- but make sure you get yourself a good one
Jane Iredale D2O and Balance Sprays are great and can be reapplied throughout the day to refresh!
